The appeals process: What to do if your CICA claim is rejected

If the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) does not make an award, or the amount offered is lower than expected, it can be difficult to understand what to do next. However, there are steps available to challenge a decision, and it is possible to ask the Authority or an independent tribunal to look at the matter again.

Building a Strong CICA Claim: Practical Help and Common Pitfalls

Applying to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) can feel unfamiliar, especially when you are already dealing with the effects of a violent incident. Preparing your application carefully can help the Authority understand your circumstances and assess your claim in line with the Scheme.

Start your No win, No fee application

We assist people affected by violent crime with applications made to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority under a No win, No fee agreement. We will explain the terms of the agreement in full before you decide how to proceed.

Our fee: Typically 25 % inclusive of VAT, calculated from any award made by the Authority.
Timescale: Most applications take between six and eighteen months. This can vary depending on the circumstances of your case and the time taken by the Authority to assess the evidence. All matters are overseen by a solicitor.

There are no upfront costs, and you only pay our fee if your claim is successful.
